Overview

The project was created within my sophomore Graphic Design course at DePaul University. Ecosummit is Europe’s leading smart green innovation and impact conference for startups, investors, and corporates in Berlin, Amsertdam, Stockholm, and London. The conferences are physical marketplaces enabling personal meetings and long-term relationships in a relaxed and productive atmosphere. Ecosummit brings together aspiring professionals from all across the globe, such as ecologists, environmental scientists, agricultural engineers, professors, and biochemists. The attendees work together throughout the week to develop new, practical methods to help preserve and improve our current ecosystems.

The focus of this conference is to address and correct current issues that are taking place throughout our ecosystems. Symposia and lectures will relate to topics such as ecological engineering, ecological restoration, green infrastructure, adaptation to climate change, earth stewardship, ecological modeling, sustainable agriculture, and protection of biodiversity.

The Goal

This project was created during my final design course to complete my Minor in Graphic Design at DePaul University. The objective was to develop a mockup kit for an upcoming conference in our designated city. This kit could consist of a variety of items, such as hats, shirts, journal covers, banners, and web design layouts.

The Process

This project was created during my final design course to complete my Minor in Graphic Design at DePaul University. The objective was to develop a mockup kit for an upcoming conference in our designated city. This kit could consist of a variety of items, such as hats, shirts, journal covers, banners, and web design layouts.

Affinity

Before beginning any sort of design work, we were instructed to create a slogan and theme for the conference. I decided to name my conference, “Affinity.” My conference focuses on the balance of nature and technology, and how we, as human beings, can achieve that perfect harmony throughout our Earth. Affinity refers to the relationships that we have with mother nature and how we can develop new technologies to help preserve its beauty and vitality. The slogan of the conference is, innovate, sustain, flourish. I decided that these three verbs accurately depict the overall goal that each attendent is striving to accomplish during the conference.

Affinity Billboard

The image displays the Affinity billboard design. The board contains the names, location, and the logo. I chose to incorporate a geometric background design because of the conference’s theme, Affinity. As previously stated, Affinity’s focus is to integrate today’s modern technology into our Earth’s nature to better enhance and sustain its ecosysems. The design represents the harmonious balance of man-made technology and mother nature.

Standing Slogan Banners

I decided to incorporate the Ecosummit logo and slogan into three standing banners that will be placed throughout the conference. The three banners were designed to display a visual representation of daylight, sunset, and night-time. I created this effect by implementing a clipping mask with the transparent logo and the background of each setting to give each banner a sense of depth and immersion to the viewers.

Website Landing Page Design

The landing page design consists of the Ecosummit logo, full-width navigation, logo, and the background hero image. I wanted to keep this landing page design very minimalistic, for I strove to emphasize the importance of keeping a proper balance of technology and nature. I did not want the viewer to get distracted by any unnecessary, overwhelming technical functions. Instead, I wanted the viewer to stay attentive and relaxed while viewing the page, as if they are actually outside in the serene landscape.

Affinity Conference Homepage Design

The homepage focuses primarily on the Affinity theme by providing the essential information about the specific conference, such as its origins, location, goals, and registration. Similar to the landing page, I emphasized the minimalistic design in keeping cluttered text and documents well organized. I also utilized the downtown Columbus skyline as the background hero image to give the viewer a taste of where they will be traveling while attending the conference.

Affinity Merchandise

T-Shirts, Identification Badges, Tote Bags

Each of the merchandise elements were designed using the same colors, fonts, and logos to accent the Affinity theme of the Ecosummit conference. After researching the preferences of my fellow classmates and locals of Chicago, I received strong feedback on how to design the shirts. Many people told me that they prefer minimalistic and clean designs on shirts and bags, keeping unnecessary text as far out of view as possible. My research showed that people strive to purchase items that contain a strong graphic or a simple heading, for this design approach is much more fashionable and visuall pleasing.

Reflection

Toward the end of the quarter, we were instructed to give a visual presentation of our conference kits taking our classmates through the progress of designing and developing the project. Throughout this presentation, I was able to acquire constructive critiques and feedback to better enhance my design and critical thinking skills for future projects. The conference project provided me the skills and implemenation of real-world product design. I gained quality experience performing extensive research and analysis to truly capture the conference’s specific demographic design.
